![]() ![]() What intrigued me was not the Rome-China connection per se but interconnectedness itself as an aspect of human history. And, of course, big events in Rome sent ripple effects the other way. When something big happened in China-like the construction of a wall that blocked invading nomads-it sent ripple effects through the nomadic world, which eventually reached Rome. China and Rome were two entirely different worlds and knew almost nothing of each other back then, but between them stretched the Central Asian grasslands of the nomads whence the Huns came riding out. The Great Wall of China going up had something to do with the Roman Empire coming down. The third one was about barbarian warriors such as Attila the Hun attacking Rome in its later days.īecause I was reading all three books concurrently, I noticed something that probably would not have occurred to me otherwise. Another was about Central Asian nomadic life in the centuries before the Mongol conquests. One was about the First Emperor of China, who put a million peasants to work building that Great Wall. ![]() This book was born some years ago when I happened to be reading three seemingly unrelated works of history at the same time. ![]()

One sign of the link is Mill's advocacy of a kind of liberal education designed to develop the core intellectual and moral excellences in childhood. Mill's utilitarianism and liberalism are also strongly influenced by the philosophical tradition of virtue ethics and politics. His theory of value is meshed with a liberal philosophy of education that is dedicated to encouraging a process of self-development. John Stuart Mill is committed to a utilitarian and liberal theory of human nature and the good. ![]() ![]() ![]() But what happened in Bellona? No one knows. The book is an enigma, It has a plot, carries along that plot. ![]() I was relieved, then, that the latest edition I read included an introduction by William Gibson, no illiterate regarding science fiction, in which he said that as much as he loved the book he didn’t understand it. I worried that I might be missing something or was too dense to understand some subtext. It’s as psychedelic a book as you might get from the era (it was first published in 1975). It’s important to state that the book makes no real sense. I think that was a partial draw, but the book in general with its setting in a mysterious city of Bellona and the odd interaction in the entire city kept me sailing through what, at that time, was the longest book I’d ever read. And not just sexual but polyamorous with what ends up being a threesome among the main character Kidd, a woman named Lanya, and a gang member named Denny. Let me just hit some of the high notes: But don’t worry about it because (a) you shouldn’t read this book, and (b) the plot is so predictable that I doubt it can really be spoiled.) (Before I go further, I should warn you that there are huge spoilers below. Miraculously, the end result is so ridiculous that it’s almost tolerable. I’m hoping so, anyway, because the alternative - that Dan Brown spent time learning about cryptography and this is what came out - is too terrible to contemplate.
